Question Wrong Flywheel??

I have a 1979 Ford F250 4x4 and it came stock with a 351. the guy before me put in a 460, it has the NP435 4spd trans. the problem is the starter teeth is not hitting the flywheel teeth properly and after years of this (under previous owner) it has worn a 'low spot' in the flywheel. and now the starter teeth dont grab the flywheel at all. We're wondering if it possibly has the wrong flywheel in it for what it needs, its like it needs to be bigger in diameter than it is. Any thoughts on this? Anyone know what diameter flywheel a 460 should have? We are dropping the trans this weekend to get a better look at things. Let me know what you got

thanks

More than likely.

What year 460 ?

For an early 70's ..You need the flywheel from a 390.

I think there was 180 teeth & 184 teeth.

check here in the 1984 truck section

Well we dont know exactly what year the 460 is, we assume its in the 70's vintage (had one in a boat EXACTLY the same).... Any way to tell what year an engine is?

Look for a block casting number, that will narrow it down a bit:

D1VE-6015-AB = 1971 thru midyear 1979

D9TE-6015-AB = Midyear 1979 thru the 1980's. This engine uses a weighted spacer behind the vibration damper, the earlier 460's spacer isn't weighted.

Make sure you get the Date casting.

On a 460 Intake it is at the back

On the heads it is in the oil galley

On the block it is near the other number just up from the starter.

Look for markings like this: * 4B22 *

This would mean a year engine ending in 4 ie: 74-84
B = Month of February
22- 22nd day

much like this:
