Best steering fluid?
Well, I'm almost done with my steering assist system overhaul. My question is what would be the best fluid to use in this system. I know the original fluid they used was Type F (probably Mercon III now). But I wonder if there is another fluid that would be better, maybe something specifically for steering cylinders, or maybe something like an AR&O hydraulic oil. (low foam and water absorption capabilities)

Use a true PS fluid. I've tried many fluids in these old ford trucks and have found that the thick clear blue tint true PS fluid is the only way to go. Many PS fluids on the market now are red hydralic fluid based and do not work well in these ford trucks. The best fluid I have found for these trucks is the Napa PS fluid its still the real PS fluid not the red like many have switched to recently. Also when you change your fluid make shure you purge the system by running new product thru the system and into a wase container. You dont want any of the old fluid left, it will not mix with another type or brand. I hope I helped. Please ask if you need purging instructions.

Yes, do not use todays ATF in your old power steering. The formulation has changed greatly since the seventies and it is bad for the old rubber parts. Use plain old power steering fluid from the auto supply or discount store.
