84 Ranger Running Hot

The trucks running hot for some reason, and I'm not sure why...in order to get it back to the middle of the normal range rather than at the very edge of it, I have to rev up the engine. Taking a wild guess, I'd think the thermostat must be getting stuck shut or something, and that reving up the engine helps in freeing it loose. The temp shoots up when I stop at redlights, but comes back down when i either give the engine a bit of gas or start going and i guess the gas/wind combination brings it down a touch. I have yet to check the coolant levels as this this a new issue, so that could be it as well...how hard is the thermostat to replace, and any other ideas on what it might be?

Thanks!

Could be a thermostat, but is sounds more like an air flow problem. When you is speed up the engine or start moving, more air flows through the radiator to cool back down. Make sure the fan shroud is intack and that the fan clutch is working properly. Does the fan turn freely when the engine is shut off and cool? That normally indicates a bad fan clutch. What engine size is it?

It's a 2.8L V6. I don't think its an air flow and hope its not the water pump...the reason is, the temp comes down a bit at hwy speeds, but still stays well above the typical area it used to stay in in the "normal" area. In fact, it's almost out of the normal range even at highway speeds.
