I want to put a cat back on a 2004 explorer XLT 4x4 with the 4.6L. After having Mustangs for 17 years I want a v-8 rumble but without the drone on the highway. My original plan was to buy a cat back system and put it on myself, but I didn't find too many options. My other choice is to go to a local muffler shop and have them put in a different muffler and new pipe out the back.
After living with 2 chamber flowmasters on Mustangs for years I want something not quite that loud without the drone on the highway. Has anyone done a catback on an 02 or newer v-8 and how did it sound? Does anyone have any recommendations?
I believe Magnaflow makes a kit. It would be just the sound you are describing. I've run Magnaflow kits on both the Rangers I had and loved them. Easy to install in your driveway. I run Flowmaster mufflers on the Explorer, but will be going to a Magnaflow muffler when I finish the true dual setup this winter.
They show $558.99, but if you hit 'Add to Cart', the sale price is $407.00.
Might shop around and see what you can find. I would also say just getting a Magnaflow muffler and having it installed with a new pipe out and a tip would probably be just as cheap from an independent shop around you...
