Exclamation changed 4.2 engine now trans wont work?

We just replaced the engine in our 1997 F150 4.2 with a 1998 4.2 finally got the motor to start now the trans wont do anything. You can put it into any gear and nothing. Can someone tell me what could possibly be wrong.

Are you sure you hooked up the cable that shifts the tranny? also check the transmission fluid.

Did you remember to bolt the flywheel to the torque converter?

Did you properly reseat the torque converter in the transmission?

Refill the fluid properly?

We are going to look and see if the torque converter is set right. Seem to think that when the trans was bolted back to the motor the converter was pushed to meet the trans and not pushed back. Hope that makes some sense. going to look at it Saturday afternoon. Appreciate the replys, I will keep you posted. On another note, the engine was having trouble cranking once everything was hooked back up. Sounded like it was missfiring. Contacted a mechanic who is friends with a co-worker and they had the same problem with a 4.2 he said to change the wires and reverse them. Husband did that and it cranked up like a new one. Go figure. So maybe that will help someone. Dont know exactly what the exact swap was, I just happened to not be there when he did it. But it finally cranked. Then OOPS no movement. We will see tomorrow. Thanks
