Well I left the Rv business. Now I can be a little more impartial, anyway I will still be here when I can to help out.
I think I have had enough of working for someone else, it's time to make my own money anyway. Bought an F650 5 yard dump truck, 2 trailers, a backhoe and bobcat. I'm gonna go play in the dirt with my trucks LOL.
Anyway I will try help out with what I can, there is a lot of information in here and I am having a great time being part of it.
Where'd you work, Toyman? I'm with Hensley Mfg. in Davison, Michigan. The RV business is tough. We tried our own RV dealership in '01. Man, what a ride, mostly downhill. I like making hitches and brake controllers better. Less overhead and less complaints!
We're advertising on here now, the Trailersaver hitch. Nice looking forum.
With out giving names, I was at a dealer ship north of lansing yet south of Saint johns on old US 27. It was good, but there was an agenda that I was not part of after the last General Manager left. I was there 7 years, made a ton of money for the company, and got the boot from a "friend". Anyway, no more working for the "MAN". I will be in control of my own animal from now on.
I will still be towing, but mostly a 12K trailer behing the dump truck with a backhoe. Hopefully in a couple years I can get a bigger truck to haul the excavator with, the F650 just won't do it.
I hear that, Toyman. I was an engineer for Ford until last year. Life is too short. Hensley is a small company and my father-in-law owns the controlling shares. My wife is CFO, so it's essentially a family business. I have control over all advertising, brake controller development, and making the coffee. It's good to be in control of your own destiny. God bless you and best of luck. We'll get this state back on its feet yet.
Toyman, I too had my own company for over 20 years. We were very successful and had a good time. There is a difference between working for the MAN who is your boss and working for the MAN who is your direct customer. A fine line, but I did like working for the MAN who was my customer. I always had the choice of whether I wanted them as my customer or not. And there were a few that I didn't want.
It's kind of scary, but it already has a pretty good backing. Need to make sure I can make money, than figure out how to take it to the next level. Of course I have big dreams of a bunch of business, and a couple crews out at the same time. But I need to start slow, me and a helper for a while.
Thanks for the encouraging words.
Hensley Ron.. Your company makes an awesome hitch, I have a couple customers that purchased it and just love it.
Thanks, Toyman. It's good to work for a company that makes products I can believe in. By the way, check out Google Adwords. They really do work, even for a local company. You can set them up so they only cover a specific area. You'll see my ads pop up in here (other than the banner) from time to time. They really do work. The best book on the subject is "The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords." I know, not quite as exciting as wrenching on a truck, but it pulled our sales way up this year.
