Hey folks, I've been looking for an excuse to lift my SD and finally got one. Buddy of mine gave me free tires, great huh. Only problem is my SD is an 01 thus it has 16" wheels, his tires were on an 05 which had 17's. So I need some 17 inch rims. Ive been told that 17's were not an option in my model year, so my question is can i use ones from a newer SD? Any light shed on this issue is certainly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!
The newer style wheels cannot be used on the older Super-Dutys without wheel spacers. When Ford changed the front suspension in '05, they changed the wheel offset considerably. So if you try to put '05-up wheels on your '99-'04 SD, they'll be too far in toward the frame, leading to some serious rubbing on turns.
On the subject of spacers...I've heard a lot of people say they've run today's billet aluminum spacers with fine results, but I remember the days of cast aluminum spacers, and how prone they were to breakage. I would imagine the billet spacers are probably up to the task, but if it were me, I'd find new wheels with the proper offset, and skip the spacers altogether.
