Please help, how do you remove the frnt disc brake rotors on a 2001 explorer sport 4x4....not sport-trac....just a explorer 4x4 sport w/300cid.......and which pads should I go with there seemsto be a ton of choices, whats stock?
Thanks everyone, Tom....
Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the brake caliper to the bracket. Hang it on the upper A-arm with a coat hanger or some piece of wire.
Next slide the pads out. After that remove the two 15mm bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the spindle. You might have to tap on the rotor to get it off. It will depend on how long since the rotors were last removed.
When yo put the caliper bracket back on make sure to get them tight. 100-120 ft lbs is recomended. It's also a good idea to use some thread locker on the threads.
As for pads I have Wagner semi-metlaic on my '97 Mountaineer. I have had them on for a month now and I have no brake dust so far. They were around $45 for the front.
Just reiterating what 97MM said about the caliper bracket bolts. I too recommend thread lock on them and tighten down as much as possible.
It is no fun to have the caliper and bracket come off and rotate in your wheel while you are running down the road because a bolt came out... Mine did one time...
Here is a link for the brake pads I'm using. It's the Wagner Premium Semi-Metalic. I think the part # shown is the part's store own part # not Wagners.
