[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-02 AT 03:28 PM (EST)]I've been smelling gas lately but haven't noticed any leaks on the floor. Well, the mechanic had it up on the lift to replace the rear axle lube and notice gas streaking down the side of the rear tank. Nothing too much, but noticeable. The tank has rust spots and potentially a small hole. I estimate it's been like that since earlier this summer.
The question is- is it unsafe to continue driving like this? A gas tank/labor would be $2-300 and I'm not looking forward to that. What can be done? I need all suggestions. If you need more info let me know.
In addition, how hard would it be for me to replace the gas tank myself?
Have you checked your fill hose from the filler to the tank that my be whats leaking. If you do have a hole in your tank and you dont want to drain it or otherwise pull it out of the truck(read pain in the butt) you can find the leak and chew up a wad of bazooka gum and slap it over the leak. I know it sound crazy but it works, i've done it before. In fact I think it's still on my tank. Anyway, thats what ground crews used to do on napalm tanks in the air force in vietnam (or so my uncle says). Good luck!
Use JBWeld or JBQuick for external repairs, but if it's rusting from inside, you can expect it to continue. Eastwoodcompany.com and many motorcycle shops sell a kit for lining the tank with a polymer film, sorta like varnish.
