There is a weep hole on the bottom of the pump that leaks fuel when it has failed internally. That way it doesn't leak inot the crank case.
Here's some help for replacing it. The book syas the turbo needs to come off, not so if you have a Fed (49 state truck). If you have a calif truck the turbo needs to come off (sucks).
The cali trucks have a fuel pulse damper that gets in the way of the banjo bolt. I've heard of some that chop away part of the ribbing on the turbo pedistal to get at it.
Remove the bolts from the pump and then turn the engine over with a socket until the pump lifts up. The cam will be up and lessen the chance that the tappet can fall into the crankcase.
im gona start tearin it apart in the morning ive read the other post about 10 times i think i got it figured out il let ya'll know how i get along tommarow
More tips:
All part numbers you need are in the Link in my signature.
Clean out the engine valley. Raise the front as high as you can. The crud will run out the back of the engine onto the ground.
Be sure to follow wreckit's advice. But Dropping the tappet isn't the end of the world, It usually makes it all the way to the oil pan. New pumps come with a tappet.
Buy the 3 little blue hoses that go to the filter. Cut them off and remove the filter housing. This exposes most of the engine valley. Now is a good time to inspect the HPOP for leaks. More cleaning is advised, Especially around the fuel pump so dirt doesn't fall into the opening.
You don't need to bend a 1 1/4 box wrench for the banjo bolt if you use the older style (not polished) craftsman wrench. It has the correct bend if you use it backward. Once it's cracked loose you might be able to get it out by hand. Check the threads before you install the pump. You want it to screw in verry easy. Get new banjo bolt gaskets/washers. I used mechanical fingers to slip the second gasket into place. Tricky, but do-able. Beer helps
Take off the front tires and drop it on the ground. Makes it less painful. You will spend a long time laying over the hood latch area. Some guys even removed the latch. You'll see.
You have to replace the fuel pump, the banjo bolt 2 washers and the 3 blue hoses. yuo also can change the small hose from the FPR and the hose of the drain valve.
I would check the canister for leaks, the FPR for leak and the drain valve. and As Cuda said check oil leaks.
Glad you got it done. It's amazing to me how there could be so much crap in the filter housing. It must be to hard to open the drain valve for the PO. LOL
