I was rotating my tires the other day and noticed a problem on the front axle (both sides). Inside the steering knuckle just to the left and right of the U-joint there was a rubber ring around the axle. I can only assume this is some sort of dust/dirt seal that had tron loose. Does anyone have any good info on how to replace these? I could really use part #s, exploded views and directions if anyone has documented it.
Check Guzzles page. I'm not sure which ring you are referring to but he has some nice write-ups on axle maintainance with pictures. No exploded views but he gives part numbers.
It's just a dust seal that presses on the axle to help keep dirt out of the axle tube itself. There is another seal at the differential that keeps oil in and helps keep dirt & water out. I think every SD out there has that exact same problem, unless you've replaced it. Unfortunately the only way to change it is to pull the front end apart and slide the axle all the way out. Oh and they run right around $15 each.
i did this back in july. just so you know to do this you may need to replace the outter axel seals(for vac shift on the fly auto hubs) thet are about 100$ each seal. and you would have to buy the seal press or make your own as many people do i just got the press. but the dust deal just needs to be tapped on. its a easy job i would rate it about a 4 out of 10. but if you do it replace the wheel bearing in the hub itself. its like 5$ and takes only a few min's. look at quad4x4.com that where i got all my parts. good luck and if you need any help let Us on the site know.
I've got the same problem on one of my axles. So you are saying it will be fine to not address it right away. I've got bigger fish to fry and am hoping this can wait till next year sometime.
if it is just that dust seal on the inner most part of the axle and the housing meet it will be fine. but always remember if you know something is wrong its always better to fix it asap. just my 2 ct
