Hey boys, got a problem with my starting on my 94 psd. Whenever my truck is cold it doesn't want to light up very quick. I usually have to hit the glow plugs twice, even at outside temps around 60 degrees. I first thought my glow plugs or the glowplug relay may be bad, but I checked the resistance across the glow plug contacts at the valve covers and they were all ohm'ed out at <6ohms. Which I know should be a good thing. I checked the gp relay and it is working marvelous. When ever the truck has sat for more than 4 hrs, it cranks over longer than it should and hesitates to light. But it's a whole different story, if the block heater has been pluged in at all, then it just lights up like an angel! I'm looking for other suggestions on things to check? I know that the glow plugs also go off of the engine oil temp, and the baro pressure; so I'm wondering if one of those may be a problem too? Or could I still have some gp's that are weak even though they ohm out just fine?
I also forgot to mention that when it has the rough start, that it never runs good for a few minutes until you "get it cleaned out". But then it runs fine after that.
Thanks
Thanks, I put a battery analyzer on my batteries last night and my driver side bad was 100%, but my passenger side came up "bad battery, replace". So that's in the plans too. Will that make a huge difference?
Thanks
Ok. That make a lot of sence! But then what about the rough idle after the start. It doesn't do the typical, whomp, whomp, that everyone says they have; mine just acts like it has a "hairball" and acts like it isn't getting any fu
Ok. That make a lot of sence! But then what about the rough idle after the start. It doesn't do the typical, whomp, whomp, that everyone says they have; mine just acts like it has a "hairball" and acts like it isn't getting any fuel to it.
The batts are wired in parallel. So a batt with a bad cell (low output) can drag down the good batt. With 2 good batts and a good alt you still sometimes will see the voltage drop below 12v at cold start.
x2 with Bill. If your truck is runing crappy after you get new batteries then come back here, you'll get all the help you need. BTW: you should replace both batteries. If you do only one, the other (weaker) battery will drag down the new one.
Hey FARM69, I let you know what happens with mine, I put new batteries on it last night. After using a battery analyzer I determined that one was completely shot. I wasn't very cold this morning at start up, but I did notice that it turned over a little easier, duh! Come the end of the day at work, after it's been setting for 10hrs, that will be the test. As far as your truck, with the unsmooth running until the EGT gets 300; I don't have a pryo so I can't truley guage mine on temperatures, but that would make sence. Which is why I'm thinking that I may have an Eng. oil temp sensor or a baro pressure sensor that isn't working. Anyway, I ordered new motorcraft glowplugs last night, I figure that the truck is 14yrs old, gp's are cheap insurance, so why not replace 'em 'fore winter?! Anyway, I'll let you know what happens with everything here pretty soon. Thanks
While your in there check your EBPV and sensor tube.
The EBPV is adjustable. Use the ford spec or adjust to your preferance.
The valve can hold alot of heat into the motor while cold. The sensor gets exhaust pressure so it can open the valve so not to fall on its face.
