I have a 2005 expedition 5.4 3v. 70,000 miles (out of warrantee). The other morning the wife calls and tells me the CEL is on, so I tell her I'll check it after work. I get home the light is on and under a load it seems to be miss firing, but not all the time. I take it to my friends shop, and on the way there the message center goes on and says "check throttle control system" (or something like that). When I hit the gas pedal it does not accelerate. I put it in neutral, cycle the ignition switch and it starts back up, all is well. The only problem is now the CEL is off. I get to the shop and use a snap on scanner to check for codes. The shop does not have the latest equipmet so I use the generic ODBII function to check for codes and the scanner can not communicate. I checked all the pins on the ODBII connector and have power on pin 16 and ground on pin 4 & 5. So I take it over to the local auto zone to see if its just my equipment and use their code reader. The code reader can not communicte either. The expy. still hesitates under a load, but not all the time. The plugs, air filter, fuel filter were changed 10000 miles ago. I was thinking it could be boots or a COP.
Does the 05 Expedition have a different ODBII system?
Any ideas on why I can't communicate with the PCM?
Any ideas on the throttle control issue, or the miss?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Time for a new scanner. Ford switched over to CAN-OBDII protocol communications for 2004 model year. AutoZone hasn't updated their scanners, either, in many places.
Once you have your fault codes, we can more easily assist.
Thats what I thought, thaks for the responce. My scanner cartridge only goes up to 01. I'm not in the business any more so its hard to justify the $700.00 upgrade.
The 3V's went with a new processor called "Spanish Oak" which is a great deal but it sucks for tuning/datalogging diagnostics. 99% of the old "readers" won't work.

100% of the "old" readers won't read ANY of the 04 and newer trucks. Like I said, Ford adopted the new communications protocol. Doesn't matter if it's called "Spanish Oak" or "Mossy Oak" or whatever.
"Cheap" CAN-OBD-II code readers are available at WalMart for around $70 that will pull and reset codes (only).

I forund a prom update for my snap on scanner the will bring it to 2007 standards.
I went on E-bay last night and did some searching around and found the update for under $40. Says I can read all CAN systems with the updated prom. So, hopefully I'm back in business. Thanks for the replys. I'll post the codes and results when I get the update.
