solenoid on the starter maybe
if you crank on the starter two long you can burn out the contacts
sometimes you just get a click when you turn the key some times you get a delay
i always get the click
My 93 7.3 liter is having hard cold starts. It might be my solenoid. But I just noticed a leak above the starter (oil). It might be from hard starting, which may have blown the dip tube gasket? Am in MA from Long Island, where the temp is milder in the winter. I think the extra pressure to move the oil may have popped a seal. If I cycle the glow plugs twice it starts a lot easier. When its warm out it starts right up. Does this help? Any sugggestions? Also , my glow plug controller clicks alot. An old timer said to check the O2 sensor.
With deisels, there are always maintenance issues. Just pushing 170,000 miles.
Replaced a lot of stuff already.
when I clean the contacts to the solenoid I'll let you know. Also, oil viscosity may be a factor. In the winter you may have to add a quart or more of thinner oil to help.

Reason: forgot additional info
Could be key switch also....disconnect the small activation wire on the fender relay, key turned to start check for power..
Check the fender relay.......for proper operation too... You can jumper it after using the two large studs.. to confirm if it is the starter solenoid........

your pick up should not have a o2 sensor on it due to the lack of computer control and when you say clicking is it clicking when the wait to start light is on or off
Hey guys thanks for the info. It helps alot to pick your brains because the manuals can only tell you so much. And besides, my mechanic friend is too busy for me to be bothering him after work. He does help me out sometimes for free, cause a lot of guys don't try to fix their own trucks. This forum has helped me to save a lot of money on repairs...that I can't afford. I appreciate the info.
I'll check the grounds first... and then go from there. Still learning...alot to take in at times.
Hey thanks Dave. I pop up here once in awhile when my truck is having issues. This site is really cool because its sometmies hard to find a friend that talks trucks. I've been frustrated at times with my deisel, but its been worth it in the end. Keep uopthe good work.
