I have a 1986 302 EFI with dual tanks. I have filled both tanks up, but when I switch to the rear it still pulls from the front tank. It still registers the right amount of full in the back tank but doesn't draw directly from it. I can go through several fill ups with the front tank, and then back tank will be empty. I am wonder if it is the rear fuel pump in the tank or I have something wrong with the fuel tank selector valve on the frame. Any suggestions.
I would look under the truck at the valve, and make sure someone didn't bypass it or something. You should have three pumps. One in each tank, and one high pressure pump on the frame rail. My guess is there is something wrong with the valve.
I'm having other problems, but, this one i'm familiar with.
I have the same truck 86-efi two tanks, had it 7 years, first time I filled up both tanks fuel started overflowing from the rear, the gas transferred from the front to the back, especially if it sat all night.
I have replaced (in the last month) both internal fuel pumps, external i've changed about 3 times,it still did this....UNTIL....
Replace the Porcupine valve, its the valve above the canister fuel filter, you have a bad diaphram inside it. both tanks feed into it,theres like 6 lines going into it,its pretty easy to change too,the connecters are just like the snap ins that connect on the front filter. this should solve it.
