Injection pump and injectors

Hey guys - how can I tell if my injectors or injection pump needs replacing? It starts fine, barely any smoke when unloaded and the peddle to the floor. when I load it with my 5th wheel , 5500lbs and its a low rise, and I have 410's, its a dog and can barely hold 60 MPH on the highway and a small hill i will be down to 65 or 70. The truck has 123k miles on it and has been dealer maintained since new but everything is original on it. I back off so its not too smokey on the hills but I only get 9.8-10.3MPG (thats Canadian MPG which is about 20% bigger than US gal). I do not go over 2700RPM with it.

Would new injectors give me a bit more power and maybe a pump?

Just wondering if thats normal or not. Not that Im not in a hurry but I had a power stroke and with the same trailer and was getting 17-18 depending on the speed which was 55-60 MPH.

Thanks

A lack of power and bad mileage could be related to any number of problems from the engine, (Pump, pump timing, cam shaft having worn lobes or jumped a tooth, a contaminated pump or injectors from water or crap addatives in the fuel causing internal gumming or rust) trans (balloned torque-converter), exhaust rectriction (squished pipe) or intake restriction (dirty filteror hell, even a rats nest in the intake tract with some pissed off tennants), or it could simply be rusted "E" brake cables or bad return spring causing the brakes to drag.

Well the pump was timed at a diesel shop. I wouldnt think its the cam. There is no water in the serparator, I cannot speak of its life before I bought it. But the old guy I got it from had it since new and gave be a 3 inch binder with paper work on every oil change and service since new (even had tire prssure readings from the trips he took). Intake is a ram air and the exhaust is a 4 inch with a full flow muffler. I run stanadyne ever tank since i got it. The whole transmission incl TC was replaced with a "tow" shift kit just before I bought it. Brakes are not dragging at all, I just serviced them 2000miles ago.

This truck use to sit in a heated (45-50*f) garage for the winters since it was new. I wonder if the internals of the pump sat with some condensation on them and rusted internally?

All I know is that it sucks the fuel when towing 5500lbs and if that what it should get id be happy but from looking on here people get alot better than 10MPG canadian or 8.4 MPG US gal.

If it is going to drink it that bad I'l get a stroke, which id rather not do, but if id get double on my holiday which are usually 2000mile or more trips, I'll do it.

That milage doesn't soud that bad with a N/A 7.3 and a 5,500 lb trailer to me. Not sure I've never owend or towed with a N/A befor my 7.3 factory turbo gets about 20mpg US on the high way @ 65mph and not much lower around town I also have 4.10s My milage didn't seem to drop when I towed my jeep but that wasn't much wait and i was just going across tow. If you do you're planed turbo swap you'll get much better milage and be able to tow better, acording to backs the sidewinder kit will out grade a power stroke.

You numbers seem normal to me for na but some one who owns one will have to give you a definate answer.

Hey what do you guys call baccon?

We call it bacon.

With your fifth wheel it is not the weight that is slowing you down and drinking fuel, it is the large frontal area you are pushing through the wind.

A turbo would make a big difference.

I drive a powerstroke dump truck for work-2001-with a miniskid in the back and I assure you, it never gets 17-18mpg lol!! It is a 6 spd and the boxer weighs less than 2000# I thinks it gets around 10-12 and that's if i shift @2000rpm every time.

it takes an "x" amount of fuel to move "x" weight at "x" speed. Dosent matter what you drive

Well if thats what it should get thats what I'll have to take! My buddies 98 PS gets 17 MPG/Can or 14ish US gal. towing the 5th wheel, I have towed with it and thats what it gets. Maybe its the turbo making the differance. Will a turbo make that much diff?

After ArchAngel replied I decied to take the side cover off where you turn up the fuel and there was rust inside the cover!!! I didnt trun up the fuel yet tho.

I guess I'll just accept it at face value. Now i'll have to justify a turbo!!!

Thanks guys, I never towed that heavey in the mountains before and im always in the mountains so I dont know what the expect.

if you have any black smoke at full fuel(pedal to the floor) you can get better mileage by turning down maximum fuel delivery in the ip black smoke is partly burned fuel more black smoke does not =more power
black smoke = wasted fuel
