Can anyone out there help me. I have a 90 Bronco with a 5.8 and an E4OD. Well here is the problem; when I put it in drive, it moves like it is in 3rd or 4th gear, the rpm's are up and the power is there but it barely moves. Now if I start from L1 it moves fine. Any ideas? I recently did some upgrades, such as MSD offroad ignition system, Hypertech computer module, Mr. Gasket 16" eletric fan, underdrive pulleys, and I also have a new 100A Masterpower alternator that I haven't installed yet. I've tried trouble shooting the new installs to see if they were causing the problems but no luck. The fluid level is good and no dicoloration. Any ideas on other areas to check.
Almost sounds likes your torque converter clutch solenoid isn't being energized in the tranny... I had that same symptom when I was rewiring my computer from speed density over to mass air flow and forgot to hook up the TCC solenoid wire... Just a thought bro!
Well, found the problem, there was a harness unplugged on the passenger side of the tranny, plugged it in and no more problems.
Well, it actually is not a problem, is an "emergency mode" designed on the E4OD trannys.
The basic Ford Idea was: If you have some mayor electrical problem with the tranny Solenoid Pack, you can still drive it using this procedure:
1º Disconnect solenoid pack connector (That one on tranny at passenger side)
2º Start engine
3º Move manual lever to "2", the tranny will shift into Second gear, then drive.
4º When truck reach about 2.000 - 2.500 RPM shift to "D", then tranny will shift to Fourth gear and you can drive almost normally around 60 MPH
5º Moving lever to "R", tranny will shift into Reverse.
This will work if there is no internal damage on tranny, no stick valves, nor burnt clutch packs, etc.
WARNING: as a tranny protection, the Line pressure will be maximum all time, so tranny will shift really hard. Use this procedure just to move the truck out of way OR to the closer service/towing facility.
WARNING: Don't use this procedure if truck is towing, OR with more than 500lbs load over OR going up hill. A lot of heat will be produced at converter and tranny can be overheated.
