can i get just 1 performance head?

heya all im new to the site and have a 74 ford f-250 camper special that i just bought ( after convincing my wife for many months) and it came with a blown head gasket. I have a extremely low budget and would only be able to purchase 1 performane head and was wondering if it would still add to my hp's. this will be the first thing im doing and figure i might as wel since will have the top half off anyways and might need a replacemnt, u guys think this is a good idea for first hp upgrade, or should i just resurfade head and maybe get a intake manifold and chrome kit lol hvea about for 400 for fix and 3oo for fun h/ps for a total for 700 ish (thats why 1 head lol, will do work myself..i bought a book ...aahahaha)? ? btw its a 390 engine ,i live in santa claritq and could use name of cheap honest mechanic as well lol, can also contact me at tonytonester@yahoo.com

pull both heads, do some port matching to the new intake and exhaust gasket openings, do the same on the intake and exhaust manifolds or headers as well.

Roller: he needs a mechanic, suggesting port work and valve disasembly is going to lead to disaster.

Yank both heads
3 angle valve job
port work in the valve pocket areas, and exhaust porting. Machine shops charge by the hour, leave the intake alone for now. Exhaust side is alot weaker than the intake
new valve guides (ABSOLUTLEY NO KNURLING!)
timing chain (non smog era)
RV camshaft
Timing and carburetor jet size adjustments

Ditch the chrome kit, ditch the dress up kit. Don't bother with the aluminum manifold for now, put the money into the motor.

Do a compression test on the engine before you tear into it. If the numbers are excessively low, the rings might be too tired to bother justifying the head work. Worn engines do not last long with fresh heads.

Welcome to the site

My opinion.
If you're going to do something ..do it right.

Save your money until you can do things evenly (same time)

Re-Building the top end will make things worse for the bottom end.
Then you have to go thru all the expense again to rebuild the bottom end.

Check out the performance & rebuilding forum.
This forum is about 73-79 truck discussion (year pertinent).

Your topic is all engine work.
