I don't know the actual tow rating for that truck, but I know that the 78 F-150 I had would pull anything I could put behind it. The C-6 is going to be fine, although I would add a large transmission cooler to it. I would also make sure I had over load leaves in the back. How big of a trailer are we talking?

I would say that with a set of overloads, if your frame isn't all rusted out and your axles aren't messed up already, you should be able to pull a "standard" camper. I wouldn't pull anything over say 35 feet, largely due to the wheelbase of the Bronco being so short comparitively. Just don't forget the transmission cooler.

matt,
i appreciate the feedback, but not what i'm looking for. in the state of ct, fines for overloaded trucks will literally put you in the poorhouse due to the tragedy on avon mountain a couple years ago and another near miss with a runaway truck last month at the very same intersection. i need to know manufacturer specs for this . good point on the frame though, but luckily it solid . truck only has 57,000 on it.and i do plan on putting a cooler in it.

Well 78lotlizard, I hope that someone has more info. I have spent the last 2 hours searching the internet and I can't find anything. I'll keep looking though. If I don't, it's gonna bug me. :-)

I have a 79 bronco 351m c6 Trailer Special with a factory reciever hitch. The hitch has a tag that says up to 10,000 with weight distribution hitch. I think the bronco is rated a lot less than that somewhere in the 6-7,000 range, I am not positive but when I go home this weekend I will look in the owner's manual or the ford repair manuals I have it will tell for shure. I think if you stay in the under 31 ft range with lights and saftey chains, electric brakes etc up to par the cops should leave you alone.

My 79 Bronco has always pulled everything that I have asked it to pull plus some! In fact, it will pull a load better than my father's 79 F150, and our motors are almost identical! For three years, I pulled a 12 foot enclosed cargo trailer, that weighed about 6K pounds loaded, and you hardly even knew the trailer was back there, even on hills! My father's truck would work it's *** off to pull the same trailer, loaded with the same amount of weight. I think wind resistance has some to do with that though.

I have had several different antique tractors behind this thing, and pulls it just great! I added helper spings to the rear to help hold the loads, which helped level the truck out when loaded, but did give a little stiffer ride when there was no trailer behind it.

Just an FYI, it is not a factory reciever hitch. Ford did not install the hitch itself on the Bronco, that was either done by the dealer or a previous owner. None of the Trailer Special Bronco's came from Ford with a hitch installed. That was up to the purchaser to have put on. Ford only equipped the Bronco with everything else to accommodate future towing.

There were also two versions of the Trailer Special Bronco's. The light duty TS was capable of pulling 2,000 lbs and the heavy duty TS was capable of pulling 6,000 lbs.

Yah, but we all know, that a 79 Bronco will pull more than 6,000 pounds... Heck, I had my girlfriend's 2001 Isuzu Rodeo behind it a few months back with a 30 foot trailer, and it pulled it like nothing was back there. The largest load I have had behind mine, would be my father's 1953 Ford 961 tractor, and that is pushing the 8,000 pound range, and it still pulled it just fantastic! Too chicken to put our John Deere 4020 behind it though... Quite a bit larger tractor, with quite a bit more ***... Scared I will break something.
