disappointing vendor experience

I have had the unfortunate luck to run into my first bad experience with an Aftermarket supplier. Haneline Products.

I have been set on their 3n1 gauges for my 55 for, well, forever. dual 5 in, 3 gauges per cluster, all electric. speedo, fuel, battery; tach, oil, battery; ( white shown here from their web page, creme are my actuals)

different, balanced, not crowded..

I ordered these May 10.. On June 10 I called to check, 'order?, no order under that name!'.. called monthly, then bi weekly, then weekly..
no idea when they will come in, no-one here right now, the mgr is out.. I just take the orders.. they are all out at shows this week.

never heard so many stories before..
If they had just told me, can't do it.. I would have moved on..

Sept 14th a set finally arrive, nice packaging, nice connections to the back, (pre-wired to connectors, with pigtails for your connections)..
oops.. the two gauges are slightly different color(Tach more brown, Speedo more grey), and the markings are different between the two gauges.. one is in Bold, the other not.. (see the 'Haneline' at the bottom, and the darkness of the gauge symbols, temp, oil, volts, fuel).. didn't even notice til now that they moved the mileage window to the middle..

well, its been a fight, but I sent em pictures and finally they agreed to take em back, and swap for a white set. They said that there was some manufacturing change between runs, and that accounted for the color difference.. and they have a 'no returns' after 30 days, AND a 20% return fee..

anyhow, agreed to swap.. I sent em back, friday before last..
Finally got a hold of the owner today.. Well, we see the marking (font) differences, but they are the same on all gauges.. so you want a set or not.?

You are making up problems, no one else has complained.

Anyhow.. now I get to fight the 20% fee.. (the printed doc I have says 'may' incur a 20% restock fee, not 'WILL') and I could understand if I was just sending em back for no reason.. but doesn't anyone believe in quality control anymore?

So, steer clear.. make sure you know what u are getting yourself into..

I should have given up before the 'second' order was placed..
I've claimed thru BBB, and will thru Visa now.

Sam

Hey man thanks for the heads up! I was goin to order a set of the "streamline series" gauges from them. I did try last year and they said they were out of stock. Maybe a good thing after all? I moved on to other stuff in the meanwhile, so I never really got back to it.

Thanks

Sam, when you got off the fone with the owner, you had not reached some agreement as to what he would do for you?

Yes, today, the final 'deal' was that all the gauges have this (font) marking difference.. and that is not what I am looking for on my >$20k rod. everyone I have shown them to has remarked on the difference.. not want I want..

the owner says, sorry, can't help you.. so you want to return them, fine.. 20% fee.. 'you are arguing over nothing', there is nothing wrong.

So, $92 and $17 shipping charges.. and no gauges..
I guess I've wasted more money on unsettled decisions.. but I hate this lack of respect for the customer. My boss/company would have my a.. if I treated any of my customers this way..

Has anyone seen a 5 and twin 3-3/8s in a 55 cluster? the Classic Instruments were my next choice.. but over twice as expensive (attached image) the twin 5's are 'unbalanced' to my eye

If you paid by credit card, you should notify them of the dispute, they can withhold his money until a resolution is obtained. Since they did not sent you what you ordered, you should not have to pay a restocking fee.

The speedo/tach is ok, but the fuel/oil and the other one are just a little too stark and barren looking for me. I like Auto Meter's stuff.

By all means do this.

Thanks for the heads-up, be sure to send the owner a link to this thread.

You really need to take a look at the autometer line up. I have used 4 sets (4 diff rides) in the last 18 months and have had no issues. If you like a set in Jegs it is even lower cost. I went back to them on a gas sender issue (mustang) and they redid it for 5 bux and they knew I buy from Jegs. Their custo service is real pro. Just let them know what tank you have and the gauge will match. I even have the matching clock in the silver series.

ABSOLUTELY send a link. We have done this before and the owners will get it. Than send a link to the Kustom,Ratrod, HAMB, and any other builder groups and it will spread via the wide web.

Yes, I had to wait til they refused to file a claim with the credit card company. I will do that tomorrow.. I have already filed complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

thanks.. but I don't see any combos in the AutoMeter line.

I don't want a 6 gauge solution. I don't want digital. Its an automatic, but I want a Tach. So that is 6 functions in 2 or 3 spaces.

Classic Instruments and Haneline were the only two I have found with those arrangements.

eGauges.com has most of the vendors in one place.

Call a lawyer. I know it seems a bit too far to go, but you can often times get a local attorney to look at the pics, and send a scary gram, for a small fee. Might be worth a few more to get what you really want. Then, if they still **** and moan, the thought of them losing a lawsuit will make them bend over backwards for you. Have used this technique in the past (I know, it sounds harsh) and have had good luck with it. Then again, I have also used my prior service name, rank, and serial number to get my point across as well. Most people get freaked when some former military personel gets a hold of them, and starts babbling about U.S. penal codes, and local statutes. (They freak big time, and lose their tone real quick). I have had a good time with a cell company that didn't do what they were supposed to against my wife using the military approach. They immediately refunded the amount they goofed on, and apologized with a 6 month free service of some kind. Not saying that it is necessarily the right thing to do, but when you got some corporate jerk trying to stiff you, it only takes a minute to stand up for your right to not get stepped on. Heck, get me the info, and I'll call em up for you. Could go after them just like I did the U.S. Marshalls office when they jacked my little brother. (had a regional big wig sending apologies to my folks, and offering info on how to get the door replaced in no time).

thanks.. but it doesn't look like there is anything to 'win' here with force. The $100 won't give me satisfaction.. cause I am still without the gauges.

they've had the money for a month.. so it'll be harder to get back.

hey sdetweil

Take a look at www.egauges.com for classic instruments.
pretty good prices for that brand. I just bought a fuel sender
from them and an very happy.
I really like Classic Instruments and the way you can order them
(bezels, pointers, etc.)

If Classic has something that works for you I would recommend them. I had a needle "bounce" issue with one of their electronic speedometers and the tech guy, Jake, went out of his way to get the problem resolved with courteous, prompt service. No quibble, just wanted a satisfied customer. I plan to use their product again.
