expected engine/trans life span...

Hi All,

I am looking at purchasing a 2002 F150 two wheel drive with a 4.6L V8 and an automatic under the hood. The truck currently has 190,000 on the clock(all highway miles, obviously). The truck drives great and has tons of power with no knocks, ticks or rattles in the engine. The trans drops right into gear and doesnt slip at all. It is crisp on its shifts to boot. The guy is asking about $2000 below book value even with the mileage on it. Is this a worthwhile purchase just for truck to go back and forth to work with(about 45 miles per day) or should I wait and continue to look around? Thanks

I would find out when the spark plugs were last changed (if ever) and allow $2000 cash in my budget for replacement of the automatic when it fails.

imo, With 190,000 miles on it, this is a $3500 (max) gasser truck no matter how you slice it. You did not mention what the purchase price was.

The reason he is selling for $2000 less is because noone really wants it with almost 200k on the clock on something less then 6 years old.

> Is this a worthwhile purchase just for truck to go back and forth to work

No, with gas at $3 a gallon, a smaller truck with a V-6 or better a I-4 would be.

The truck has been fleet maintained since day one and was driven by one person. The oil was changed every 2500 miles, the trans fluid once a year, plugs every year(same time as the trans fluid), pretty much your standard fleet maintainance requirements.

The asking price is $3250. Sorry bout that. And the book value is around $5000 even with the mileage listed on it. The value of $5000 came from the loan officer at my credit union, even with the mileage.

As for getting a smaller truck, those dont work for me as I tend to break the springs when I load too much into them. A 1/2 ton is a little light for most of what I do, but I have a heavy duty truck on those days.

I made a low ball offer on the truck and got it for $2900. Other than a coil pack that let go, it has performed flawlessly. The fuel mileage is right around 19mpg. Seriously, I think this truck will rust out before it will wear out.

Lincoln Towncars have basically the same powertrain as your truck. Look on e-bay at the Lincolns and do a sort by mileage and you will frequently find cars that have gone 500,000-600,000 miles that were used as Limos. They currently have one listed with 571,000 miles on it and several with over 300,000.

That was a fair price for that kind of mileage, you both did well.

Expected repair.

In the ballpark. People I know got about 21 mpg highway - same as my little B2 - can you believe new technology

My truck has the same drivetrain and has just about 179,000 miles on it.
I have had it for over 6 years and have replaced the battery, IAC valve and the flywheel. The flywheel had a bad spot on it when I bought the truck and I drove it for 5 years before having it changed out.

I can get 21-22mpg on the interstate and average about 17 to 18 around town, IF I keep my foot out of the throttle!

As good as this truck has been to me, I will drive it until the wheels fall off.

The mileage that I am getting out of it is winter time driving. The temps here have been well below zero, so that really isnt too bad all things considered.

This truck has been awesome. I have just over 10,000 miles on it and it has been a great runner. Summer time fuel mileage is at 23.5 at 60 mph and the ride is fantastic. This truck will rust out before I ever wear it out though, which is fine.
