F250 4x4 with an axle code of B4J and another F250 4X4 with an axle code of 37R? Whats the better axles and is it worth a swap. Any idea of the gear ratio on the 37R? Thanks

Front axle code J = Power Steering
--------------------------------------------------------------------
37 = Dana 60 / 3.54-1 / Non Limited Slip / 5300 lb. Rear Axle Capacity
The R front axle code relates to what 4WD front axle type was used. There are two different front axles, depends on the year model the axle was used on.

HI Dennis. I found a few links to punch in codes. According to that and a few other members in a different thread the front is the optional 4500lb PS. In all fairness to you though they had the option of seeing the entire VIN. Does that mean it's just beefier? Is it a recommended swap for a Dana 3500 lb standard with 410s? If it's more trouble than it's worth I'll just list it in the parts forum. Thanks
O.k. thanks! So it's a DANA 61 3.07. Apologies for my ignorance but isn't a gear ratio of 3.07 relatively high, and thus better suited for highway fuel economy than towing?

Better for high speed driving and fuel economy.
Towing: Uh..it can do that too, but you'd better hope that GREEN light is a long one.
Can we dig a little deeper into the "so what"? Given the high gears (75' 2wd F-250 390 4v C6) and that having the C6 rebuilt is next on the to-do list (and much more likely than changing rear diffs in the near term) and that I do need to do some towing (primarily freeway), is there any modification I should have done to the C6 to improve the towing characteristics of this otherwise fine truck?
