I need to get this done on my E40D, the (lousy) manual I have says you need to use RTV sealant between the pan and the gasket- is this true or not? Does anyone know the capacity of the stock pan for this trans? I've been told anywhere from 4 to 16 quarts (torque converter included). Also, is there an easy way to fill the xfer case without one of those little pumps?
Thanks JLDickmon.
After posting, I found this article- https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...nsmission.html. If I understand this right, by allowing the engine to pump the trans dry, it will drain the trans and torque converter, correct?
I used low pressure air down the cooler lines - both directions @ 10PSI - to empty the TC and most of the passages. I got about 16qts out doing it that way. If you torque the pan bolts correctly you won't need anything but a rubber gasket - no RTV.
I followed that tutorial and it worked great. I just drained the TC by using the drain plug through the inspection grommit, then dropped the pan, replaced filter, cleaned pan and magnet, mounted pan back up with a cork gasket and torqued the bolts tight by hand. That method got me a good 14 or so quarts, give or take. I've heard the number 16 tossed around but I believe that is BOTH the transmission and the xfer case.
