So, I'm in the middle of replacing my rotors and pads on my 93 F150 XLT. I finally got the hub and rotor apart, and now I'm trying to re-install the lug studs into the new rotor/hub assembly. I was able to install the lug studs on one rotor/hub assembly, but it took quite a bit of brute force getting the lug studs to sit flush. Before I go beatin' and bangin' on the second rotor/hub assembly to try and install the lug studs, does anybody have any tips for doing so?? Right now, I'm just greasing the bejesus out of it and getting after it with a BFH and a punch.
You can get them started and pull them in with the lug nuts. If the nut bottoms out you can use a bigger nut as a spacer. An impact wrench help but it can be done with a wrench.
I've always used a cheap A-Frame press I bought from Harbor Freight many years ago. Works great for removal and installation of the studs. Probably the cleanest way of installing them.
Just buy new studs with the rotors and have an auto shop/ machine shop press them in before you go home. Talk to them like you do this all the time and you know what you are doing, and they just might do it for free.
Being polite goes along way, It works for me.
I was told to use a good nut, an impact and a washer or 2, and just work your way around.
This was told to me by a long time mechanic. and also how they did mine at the mechanic shop when i had my hub replaced (bad bearing)
Doign it with a press might be okay.
I do not suggest doing it with the actuall lug nut though. Should use a regular nut.
