I have a 1992 f-350 with a 7.3 liter non-turbo diesel with manual transmission. Yesterday I was driving it when it started acting up on me. Whenever the motor drops down from any off idle rpm, like holding it at 1500 rpm and then just take your foot off the gas pedal, it just dies. It restarts easily if I turn turn the key again. It will do it when it's cold and warmed up. This is the first thing in ten years of ownership that has givin me problems. Being it's a diesel engine I have no clue where to start to try and fix this. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I am not running any kind of fuel treatment. It has been awhile since I changed the fuel filter......if I remember correctly it was a pain in the a** to get the motor started again....I had to crank it over for a long time until the batteries were almost dead. Any tricks to changing the filter??? I will also look for Diesel Kleen and try that.
when you change the filter you have to put the bottom section onto the filter , fill the filter with clean fuel and screw it to the base. You will spill a little bit of fuel but can wipe it up. You dont want to crank on the starter too long at any one time, they are susceptible to overheating problems.
Try diesel kleen or power service in a strong dose with a filter change and see if that will help the stalling problem.
Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.
If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.
