WHat time of year is the show again? Just checking as our plant's vacation blackout for shutdown has just been anounced. Jul 1-30th. What a rediculous time for a vacation blackout!!!! That's not going to make people very happy, or willing to help out.

Yup, that's exactly what it means. And normally for shutdown, we're all there the whole time. Good money, but no time off.

I don't know about them legally do that. Especially when that is when the kids are out of school. That is the only time family has holiday time together.
What are they to do in August when all their staff take holidays then to have their vacation time with their kids.
Maybe someone should check into the labor law there or labor relation can help tell you if they can legally do that. To me that is pretty harsh. Especially hard when it is prime vacation time for people.
If you have kids how do you have holidays when kids have to be in school. Kids go to school and you stay home twiddling your thumbs thinking about the time you could be at the lake relaxing and enjoying the time. This only makes employees digruntled with their employer.
That sucks, what is that place thinking?

Unfortunately, there will only be alucky few who will get their vacation granted in August. According to seniority of course. They honestly don't care when we take our vacation as long as it's not then! They'd rather we paid out our vacation and stayed on site all year. That, of course is against the labour laws. We are required to be off site for no less than 80 hrs/year. Outside of that, there is no hard rule about it. OUr union would like to have it changed, but the company is unfortunately well within their legal right on this one. This works out not too bad for me as we homeschool, so vacation and/or school happens when the time fits, but most other guys don't have that luxury.
As to what they're thinking, $$$$$$$$. We're just employees. And yes, very disgruntled at that.

Oh yeah, we have the legal right to take 1 day off every week. But it does need to be scheduled well in advance. And it has to be on a day that is outside of 'regular' working hours. ie: Overtime.

Self employment would be great like that. For my company we can take vacation whenever, exvept in late december, january, and february. Our days off in those months are pretty slim too. Considering the kind of money we make during those months though, its well worth it. If I wasnt greedy and wanted more money, I could work just those three months of the year, and make more money then most people do in a whole year!
