Anyone have a solution?

My 95 has that nice looking aluminum piece that goes across the center of the tailgate. Unfortunately it's not attached to the truck because the lame plastic mounts Ford has keep breaking. I've considered doing some bending and welding of steel to make more solid mounts, but was curious if any of you have tried anything that has worked out. If it weren't for my sprayed in liner, I'd go junkyard a nice tailgate without that piece and have it painted to match my truck. Let me know if you have a good solution, other than ugly big-head rivets.

Mine is held on on the 4 corners by 4 stainless bolts the go through it and the lip on the sides of the tailgate and the bolts have capped nuts on the inside of the tailgate to tighten it. See for yourself it doesnt look half bad.

I'm trying to keep from drilling hole in it, but I'm getting tempted...

I had this problem on my 96 F250. I took it off, got some good quality fast setting epoxy, fixed the mounting points, and also epoxied them to the aluminum itself. I sat some weights on it while the epoxy cured and also cleaned everything with rubbing alcohol before applying the epoxy. Reinstalled and everything has been fine for a while now.
