salvaged solenoid and altanator from my old 68 to use on new 66 - installed new water pump and fan -- went to hook battery up and about melted the negative battery post. OBVIOUSLY something is not grounded? ANY SUGGESTIONS WELCOME - it does have a push button starter if that makes any difference

Check to see if your starter cable is touching the case or if the battery cable is touching the fender or solinoid where it shouldn't be. I know some positive cables have an extra power lead, that might be unshielded and touching as well. You mentioned that you replaced the altenator, remember this has a positive cable that runs back to the battery to charge it. Check all the connections on this as well.

And to point out something... You're grounded just fine if you're trying to melt the negative cable. There is a positive cable that is touching somewhere.
