engine paint

I am getting ready to reassemble my motor. Do I need a specific paint for block. heads, oil pan etc. Should I prime before painting or apply engine enamel directly to the metal. I was thinking of painting the motor the same red and white as the body and was wondering if acrylic enamel would stick. I am looking for a long lasting paint, Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

The problem you'll run into isn't adhesion, it's heat. If you check around, there are different high temp paints in rattle cans off the shelf. If that won't work, check with your paint supplier and see if they sell a high temp clear, but there's no real guarantee on that either.

I have used the rattle can engine enamel with some good luck. The intake manifold on my I6 is painted ford blue i think the temp rating is 500degrees, it has been painted for about 6 months and still looks good. The exhaust manifold on the other hand was painted flat black with the 1200degree stuff... I doesn't look bad but it's not black anymore, it's like a dark primer gray.

My valve pan and oil pan are both ainted with the 500 degree stuff and both look great.

I guess what i'm saying is the head and exhaust manifolds might turn a different color because they are exposed to the highest heat. I've seen some posts on here where guys were painting there heads and everything with Eastwoods engine enamel, silver for heads and manifolds and they look great. I have no experience with the Eastwood products yet though.
