The engine has to go up to remove the oil pan.
Also the oil pump pickup tube has to be removed before the oil pan will come out from under the engine.

Since the cross member is so close, there is no other option.
Given the size of the oil pan, how much stuff hangs down inside it, how close the cross member is and how close the transmission tunnel is to the top of the transmission, I don't envy your task.

I have a manual that says it can be done.

I changed an oil cooler, which also requires unbolting the motor mounts and raising the engine.
Even though I have a 2" body lift on my truck, the motor did not raise to the point that I thought I could remove the oil pan.

well, if it must be done then it must be done. i know how to raise the mater, but my brother in law was saying something about using a jack to raise it. can this be done? i really think he was a lirrle drunk, and he has no idea how a diesel works( argued with him cause he tried to tell me that glow plugs ignite the fuel lol) I would think you would put it on tranny, but could see how that could cause prob. if not i will push da truck to a tree and raise it there

I have sent you an email.......... but first let's discuss why you want to replace the oil pump..........If it is due to what you may perceive as low oil pressure..

Specs are...........our pumps do volume more than pressure.
10 at hot idle
40-70 at 3000+rpm

The 20W 50 would be OK for summer use.

The problem with not using diesel oil is the soot control.
Gas oil does not have the detergents or soot suspension package that diesel oil does.

yep, so i cleaned the oil pan and ran some old oil i had , but was still new. I did not have all of the bolts to put bak on the pan, i guess i lost em. But I was able to put a new gasket on the oil pan without taking it off first.
