nOt a goofg start to GA hunting season. Tried to engage 4X4 and nothing...no clicking, no engaging, no 4 wheel drive. When I got back to camp finally, tried the switch again for the 4X4 and it started clicking but still no locking in. Where is the brain box for the 4 wheel drive? On my Bronco is is on the passenger side under the cowling panel. Could it possibly be a bad switch? recently had it in the dealership to replace automatical climate control, may have knocked something loose. Any help is always appreciated.
It's not the same as you Bronco. I know those systems also.
Much more complex.
The main control is called the GEM and does a lot of other functions as well.
It's to involved to try to explain here.
You need either some help from a dealer or get a CD disc with the info.
Basicly the switch signals the GEM what function you want.
The motor on the 4x4 runs to position, send back it's position to the GEM.
Some other shift functions take place inside the trans and a relay operates to engage the front axles.
What part is not working is the question.
Good luck.
there is also a vaccum solenoid that engauges the front axle. you may want to check the connections on this line. the switch may be workind but without your diff locked, no 4x4.
check your transfer case motor - I think there's three bolts holding it to transfer case. pull it off and have someone turn switch to 4x4 to see if motor is turning. I had same issue with 98. I bought rebuilt for $100. pretty simple fix - keep us posted.
