Scanner buying

I have a 2000 F-150 XLT 4x4 4.6L with 72,000 miles. I am interested is purchasing a scanner so I can troubleshoot anything that may happen in the future. Any ideas what brand and model is the best.

If all you want to achieve is lookup codes and not alter the programming, ScanGauge is good. You can mount it above your mirror and set it up to show other gauge items like coolant temp, tranny temp, fuel mileage, etc. But it can lookup and clear the diagnostic codes.

I agree, if all you want is to just see and clear the codes, then scanguide is fine, but you would need to go online to see the definition of the codes. If you have a bigger budget you can pick up a nice scanner from autozone for 150, it read, defines, and clears codes, it's also updatable via the computer, need a seperate cable.

What about a tuner? Dont most tuners read and erase codes? They are more expensive than a normal code reader though.

True, tuners do read codes, I don't think they clear them though. Besides, it's much better to have a scanner that defines the code for you so you can go and buy stuff you need without having to look up the codes online.
