weird charging Problem

I reciently picked up a 1991 Lincoln Mark VII so I could pull the motor out and put in in my truck not bad for 500 bucks. Thought that before I started pulling the motor I would drive it and make sure everything was working. Come to find out it isn't charging. I read all the threads I could find on charging and so here is what I have done. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I pulled and checked the alternator, good. replaced the voltage regulator, making sure to bolt it up and then plug it in. I metered all the wiring and everything seems good. With the motor running the system doesn't charge but if i put 12v to the F connector on the Voltage Regulator everything kicks in and works great, charges steady at 14.2volts as long as I keep it running. As soon as I shut the engine off and restart it no charge. Help. By the way it is a 100amp G1 alt. All the diagrams i have seen have 4 wires going to the alt and to the Voltage Regulator but mine only has a two wire plug and a heavy gage wire to a post, not sure if there is a wire missing.

Do you have a red/green wire going to the alt? This is the wire from the ignition that triggers the alt to come online. You should have some voltage on this wire when the key switch is in run.

What year truck are you swapping this engine in? You may have to use the old truck alternator anyway unless you are going to do some re-wiring.

the plug has an orange with blue stripe and a white with black strip and the post is a big black wire with red stripe, and that is it. there is a small post with nothing on it. from the voltage regulator on the "I" plug there is a green wire with red stripe it goes into a wire loom and I can't find the other end to hook to the alt. Would it go to the small post? thanks for the help.

I hate to admit it but the motor is going into my 95 toyota 4runner and i am simply restoring my 79. I have searched so many other forums but this one is always the best. Sorry this isn't about a ford truck. Interestingly I have the same setup on my 1979 ford with a 400 the previous owner had put in and so I am learning useful stuff.

I didn't realize you have the seperate regulator type alt till I looked it up. The red/green wire goes to the regulator on the "i" terminal. And when it leaves the reg and goes up into the loom, it goes to the dash light and then the ignition switch. You should have some voltage on this wire when the key is in run.

Also on the reg is a yellow wire going to the "a" terminal. You should have 12 volts on this wire at all times.

On the large black/red wire, check to make sure it has 12 volts at the alt terminal with the engine off. If it doesn't, then there is a fusible link burned out at is in this wire as it makes it's way to the battery +.

Every thing you say is exactly how my wiring is. When you say that the red/green wire goes to the dash light do you mean the alt warning light and then to the ignition switch? Because that could be my problem. Before I got the car the raido had been stolen and in that process the light panel was broken and the printed circuit damaged, could that be causing a break in the circuit to the "I" terminal on the voltage regulator from the key in the run position? I am not getting any voltage with the key in run. could I jumper the plug to complete the wire and will the wire be red/green comming in and out of the plug?

thanks for the help it has been great.

the plug that went into the back of the light panel. I can see the red/green wire but how do I determine which pin on the plug is the return to the ignition switch? Thanks so much for all your guys help!!!

You are going to have to wire this in correctly when you swap the engine in, so you might as well cut the red/green out at the regulator, wire one side of a dash light to it, and then wire the other side of the light to the battery +. The light should light up until you start the engine, and if it's charging, it will go out. This will at least test the system, and give you an idea of what you need to do in the toyota wiring. Obviously don't leave the light with the red/green on the battery +, it will run the battery down. Just take it off and you will be fine.

It worked great. I went down and picked up a small two wire light and wired it into the plug where the power from the ignition switch came into the plug and then into the red/green connector of the plug and sure enough the light comes on until the motor is running and then goes out. voltage at the battery while running is a nice 14.3vdc. thanks so much. I would not have figured this out without your help. I am looking forward to having a ford powered 4runner.
