It has a 5.8L 351 Windsor, I'm just wondering what I can possibly do to the engine, exhaust, or anything to get more power and possibly better gas mileage?
Id like to keep each part under $300, just don't wanna go to overboard ya know.
More power doesn't neccessarily mean worse fuel economy. you won't have to push the throttle as much to accelerate the same way. The problem is you probably won't be able to keep your foot out of it
A quality set of long tube headers with 2 1/2" dual exaust with H pipe. Run off the cats. I am running Flowmasters on my 88 F150. I had glass packs and was looking to quiet it down a little. They have a better tone but not any quieter. The shorty headers are a waste of time and money. (thats what I have so I know from experience) Install a good set of metal gaskets. Upgrading the bolts would also be a wise investment. That will keep you from having to tighten them all of the time.
I think the stock pipe is 1 7/8 to 2".
How much effort do you want to put in to it. A cam upgrade will give you more power.
more power = LESS fuel economy, but you might look into chipping it...
That's entirely not true. It CAN be true in older vehicles that have a carb and the only way to more power was to throw more gas at it. However, since internal-combustion-powered vehicles are about 25-35% efficient (that percentage of the energy in each gallon of fuel is converted to useful motion, the rest is wasted heat and idling), there is much room for improvement in the efficiency category that can net you gains in both power and economy.
I've got a 351 that gets about 14mpg at its very best on the highway. My sis and BIL had a Suburban of about the same age that got close to 20mpg out of its 350, in a heavier vehicle. Not sure what its power was, but it probably wasn't too far off the 210hp/325ft-lbs of my 351.
