I have a 1999 F-250 4x4 with a 7.3 turbo. The truck has LT315/75R16 Mudstar tireson it. My problem is that it is a little hard to steer. I checked the fluid and it's fine. I have greased every fitting I can find. I don't see anything bent or broken or loose. I even called the Ford dealership and they said that they would have too look at it to get any ideas! Any solutions or ideas? Any help will be appreciated!
With that wide of a tire and the weight of the diesel engine the truck is not going to turn well when it isn't moving. Is that your problem, or are you having a hard time while driving? You could try replacing the power steering fluid as it does get worn out over time, and many people never think to change it out.
Sorry about that. A TRE is a "tie rod end". These ends have to rotate during the turning process, and if they are dry, the metal to metal contact will make them bind and eventually fail.
One symptom to a failing joint is a very loose TRE, this means that it is worn and is loose, but they generally get a little tight once rust and other debris get inside of the pivot / socket. This tight joint might result in tight steering.
Ball joints at the steering knuckles are subject to the same problems.
I noticed when I hit a bump and all the weight is off the front end the steering gets better so I jacked up the front and it is a lot better still could not find anything loose! I am thinking ball joints!
