460 exhaust guidelines?

For a 1982 F350, 460, basically stock, except running on LPG, with free-flow manifolds - not headers, I was considering 2 1/4" pipes off the manifolds, going into 1x 3" pipe.

Would 2 1/2" pipes slow the flow too much? ( 2x 2 1/8" pipes combined have the same cross-section as 1x 3" pipe)

Is this a realistic set-up for a 460? It's a work truck, not a racehorse, never run over 4500 rpm, usually not over 3000, but I still want it to breathe as freely as possible given these manifolds, & try to keep the peak torque at 2800 rpm, which is where I get ideal road speed.

I know headers would be a benefit, but space is pretty limited.

Any thoughts or experiences with same set-up ?

Thanks

Poor engine

Either choice will be fine for your application. You probably would not notice a difference between the two. My opinion would be to go with the 2.25". Considering the engine is never revved up, you dont need much breathing potential anyway.

Never lugged either!!

I'm just cautious after hearing that the stock rods have a reputation of letting go over 5500

A single 3" would be a good setup.

You can't baby it too much. Romping on it every now and then (When Fully Warmed Up) will help clear out carbon and etc.

AGREED! And you should really make sure to change your motor oil out more often than usual due to that low rpm tugging.

I've had two different exhaust shops recommend 2 into 1, instead of duals, partly to reduce cost, but they both felt the set-up would be better.

A 2 into 1 system would give a better scavenging effect than duals wouldn't it?

I can't see a down side as long as the sizings are correct. Has anyone changed from one set-up to the other on a similar truck? What differences other than sound?

You would not notice a difference between a good single exhaust system and a good dual syatem. Do watcha like.
