On my 1995 F150, where is the chime located that sounds when you leave the lights on or the key in? I cannot find that sucker. It chimes nice and loud when I leave the lights on but I cannot hear it when the key is left in. Is it possibly going bad?
Mine doesnt chime with the key in, only the lights on and door open. I know there is a plug for it under the dash close to the floor above the drivers side side of the trans tunnel. The plug is grey and has 4 or 5 wires going to it. Maybe the chime is on the other end of that plug.
Well that pretty much answers my question. Mine chimes well with the lights on and door open so I guess these do not warn about the key being left in. Mine must be fine. Thanks.
It is located just below the fuse panel near the E-brake pedal
most people defeat the key chime and leave the lite warning intact
Its real easy to do at the steering column
The chime box is behind the cubby hole (near your right knee) in your dash near the fire wall.
I don't know about you guys but mine chimes both when I leave my lights on and when I leave the key in, although these crappy boxes aren't very reliable so sometimes it'll chime for no reason at all. But it definitely does chime when I leave my key in the ignition.
Jim: When I opened up my steering wheel for a clock spring repair, there was a small black wire dangling with a small peice of spring steel on the end. I never could find exactly where it snapped into, so I wrapped it with tape as the original was & went on about my buisness. I believe it has something to do with activating the chime by grounding the wire when the key is left in & mine does not but the chime works for lights left on.
I got so annoyed one day when I was working on the locking mechanism in my drivers door. I was listening to my XM, and since i had the door open it was dinging all the time, so I just unscrewed the little push botton switch that the door closes when it is shut, I just unplugged it and put it back, no more dinging
scndsin the wire plugs into the lock cylinder
it is in a position that when the goes in it touches
that small piece of spring steel
that grounds the circuit to the chime
If the chime isn't working for the key in ignition cylinder, and the wire from the multi-function switch in the steering column is connected (someone mentioned above), then the contact for the ignition lock cylinder is probably bad. I had to replace my lock cylinder and I never knew the key in cylinder with the door open made the chime go off until then. Since I had the extry annoying cheap-o buzzer rather than the chime, I just pulled out the buzzer. God forbid I had my seatbelt off and the door open...
.....just to pass this info; mine does chime when light's left on and the driver's door is open, just as well as if i leave the key's in the ignition and open the door, yes indeed the thing chime's away... ......but when i'm working on something here or there with the radio playing or door's open and have the key's in, YES this thing is chiming away....UNTIL i flip this switch i installed on the main "hot" wire to the "Chime'r" >>>>>> quiet ! ! ! NO Chime whatsoever.......till i flip the switch back, when needed back to normal...... .......i kinda like the notice {chiming} when i DO leave my light switch on OR forget to grab the key's just before getting out.......BUT just can't stand the dang "Dinging" going when working on / in the truck on something...........
. . . . easiest way to find it, is just open door when leaving light's on or leaving key in the ignition and let it "Chime" away, and just use your sense of hearing to find it.....
Its right above the gas pedal...all you have to do is turn the lights on with the truck off and make it ding....feel around for it, you will feel it vibrating.....you can unplug it if you like.....the plug is on the bottom of the chime.
