Has anyone put a push button igition in there pickup? I think that would be pretty neat, and I am thinking about putting one in when I get a '78 or '79 f150 (that I'm hoping to get soon). So I was just wondering if anyone has, where there put it, and if it is very difficult to install and hook up the wires. What I'm looking at is something you can get from JEGS or SUMMIT RACING where there are a few switches for lights and stuff, an ignition switch, and then a push button for the starter. I think it would be pretty neat to hop in, flip a switch, and push a button to start it, but I don't even know if they can be put in these trucks or whether they are strictly for race cars.
Starter button locations through the years. Foot activated: Under the clutch pedal, above the gas pedal, to the right of the gas pedal, on the floor by the seat. Hand activated: Pull out **** on dash, pull up or push down or push in the gearshift lever, button on dash.
When key starts were first introduced in the early 50's (by Chrysler), ppl rejoiced. Now ppl want the button again. WHY?
What's next, cranks? I can hear it now..."Oh, my arm!"

It's your truck so whatever choice you make, make it what YOU want. If you like the pushbutton starter there are several styles. You could look to find one that fits the lighter hole to keep the dash clean or remove the key assembly and wire in a hidden kill switch and then use a push button starter there (Imports have many styles and sizes). There are some very nice custom dashes on this site, just takes a little time to work through all the galleries.
My parent's '48 oldsmobile had both. Turn the key to the on position and then push the start button. Yes, I know it is not a ford, but would still be a thief-deterrent if you really want a pushbutton.
well i kinda like my push button, although i put mine in due to other issues, but i mounted it on the left hand side of the steering wheel, same hieght as the key, picked it up at local parts store, and ran wiring to the starter selinoid. it has a black rubber top so not that noticable, as i have black interior. cost about 25$.
i like it enough that when i do get my new NSS in im going to leave it in anyway.
Well, yeah, I rethought that flip ignition and came up with the same thing you guys did. I would leave the key in for ignition but push button for starter. That away you still have to have the key to run it, so a little more theft deterant. We've got an old 53 for f600 that is that away, key for ignition and push button start. It came that way factory.
I am with you. I always thought it would be a neat idea to have it like they do in the NASCARs. I have seen them in Summit as well. I was gonna buy the one with just 3 switches and mount it where the lights were (are) mounted. But theft IS a big issue. Maybe mount a secondary toggle switch that gives the other switches power. JUST AN IDEA.
Put in your push button starter switch and whatever other switches you wish and have a secret starter disable switch? I have heard of people wiring it so that you have to be pushing on a power window switch or you have to have the cigaret lighter pushed in or have your foot pushing on a secret switch under the carpet in order to start the vehicle.
They make many awesome hidden ignition button bypass kits. Ones that come to mind are towtrucks, go jacks, tow dollies, chains with hooks, hotwiring......... A hidden switch will only slow down stupid thieves, and make it so that if they cant steal your truck, they will screw up a bunch of stuff trying.
The kits that you can buy can be made to fit just about anything, if you put your mind to it. Its your truck, and if you like the idea, do it.
I think what would be better then the push button, would be a jesus on the dash you pull towards you and it enguages the starter to start the engine.. and then jus thave the ignition on the stock key...
Nothing will stop a determined car theif. The hidden switch is just there to slow them down. If some one really wants your truck, they will take it. If you make it too hard to steal or just plain takes too long they will just snag your stereo and be gone. No petty car thief is going to spend more than 4-8 minutes trying to steel your truck. If someone wants your truck enough to drag it down the street or use a tow truck or tow dollies then maybe you should have made that last payment or payed all your parking tickets. Atleast then you can get it back from the impound............We can go back and forth all day debating about how to steal one of these trucks and how easy it is but most car anti-theft devices including the switches, are designed to cost the thief time not make it un-stealable and hopefully they will give up and you are just left with a busted window or a couple scratches.
Back to the post:
Summit sells some switches that have an aircraft style flip cover that looks pretty cool and protects the switch from being bumped into the "on" position.
