Don't you mean silicon, not silicone?

Usually, a high silicon (sand) level is caused by poor air filtration.

Yeah, I think so too. Also, aren't they supposed to tell you all of that? If not, why bother with it? Use someone else.

I believe that it is "silica" that is related to sand/dirt entrainment, and "silicone" is used as an anti-foaming agent by some manufacturers.

At the link below, I found the quote below.
http://www.webelements.com/webelemen...t/Si/uses.html
"The following uses for silicon are gathered from a number of sources as well as from anecdotal comments. I'd be delighted to receive corrections as well as additional referenced uses (please use the feedback mechanism to add uses).
  • doped with boron, gallium, phosphorus, or arsenic, etc. to produce silicon for use in transistors, solar cells, rectifiers, and other electronic solid-state devices
  • silicones are important products of silicon. They are prepared by hydrolysing a silicon organic chloride, such as Me2SiCl2
  • silica, as sand, is a principal ingredient of glass, a material with excellent mechanical, optical, thermal, and electrical properties
  • computer chips
  • lubricants
  • used to make concrete and bricks
  • used in medicine for silicone implants "

My oil comes back from the lab with a reading for silicon, and none for silicone.

Hmmm, would I get a high reading in silicon if I had used a silicone anti-foam agent, and then think my air filter wasn't doing its job? My last two were a "4", but my average is a "7" after a high of "11" back in April, '05.

Whaddia' think?

Not really sure, Pop. But when I questioned Amsoil regarding their oil's foaming tendencies, it was their Tech Support Group that told me that some of the anti-foaming agents used by oil producers contain silicone.

I can't really speak to the chemical nuances on this issue any further without guessing and/or making things up. I guess I should have gotten more specific info from them at the time to better understand what they were telling me.

There seems to be something about silicone RTV and the antifoaming agents in the oil that eludes me right now. IIRC, I thought silicone RTV was advised against because of this, or it may have been the reverse. My DVD drive is out of service right now so I cannot check the shop manual. I could have sworn I read that somewhere, probably in the oil pan sealing section.

SOLARECLPSE 2000,

"F250" is hitting the nail on the head. Silicone (i.e. RTV stuff) is found in some of the gasket materials on our PSD's and can leach into the oil system. As he mentioned, it is used in asphalt industry to add into the AC (Ashpalt Cement) to prevent/minimize again the "foaming" of the AC.

And how is sand (silica) showing up in the oil sample?
Is this an English class - correction of spelling, etc.?
