ok i have never heard this before. I have a 03 expedition EB with auto climate control. when I have my A/C on I hear a hissing noise coming from the third row seats area. At first I thought it was the fuel pump but when I turn the AC off, the noise goes away. along with the noise it seems to be in the same time duration as the AC clutch. The AC really isn't that cold. Ideas????
I had the same problem. Sounds like its breathing. Search for my posts I was given alot of great information on it. I ended up charging my ac with the appropriate refrigerant and everything is wonderful now. It also made the noise when the defrosters were on too.
I think I know what you are refering to. It sounds like a light metal clinking noise/vibration from the rear cargo area. You could hear it standing outside the car even more than sitting inside it. I took my 05 navigator in for that complaint and dealer changed my AC expansion valve for the rear AC unit and added a little more refrigerant per TSB on that issue.
Well, it worked for couple of days and it came back. I called them and they said that is all the info they have on the problem and check back at later time to see if new TSB is out for that problem.
Cool that would be great sounds like the same issue please let me know

Actually went in twice for the complaint. First time, the dealer wrote:
"Noise from rear AC unit replaced TXV per TSB 06-10-4. FP number 6L1Z-19849-B, Description: VAVLE[DS]. Added refrigerant."
Don't know what TXV valve is but you may be able to ask about the part number. Noise was reduced significantly but eventually came back a few days later.
Second time to dealer a couple weeks later, dealer wrote:
"Add additonal 5 oz. R134 per Ford Hotline to further reduce noise.
Gave up after that. One year later and the rear AC noise still remains. I will go back before my warranty runs out in the near future.
TXV stands for Thermal expansion valve. It regulates the flow of liquid refrigerant into the evaporator coil. This is done with the aid of a capillary bulb that senses the temperature at the downstream end of the evaporator. If the temperature is too cool at the outlet (i.e. the liquid refrigerant is not all being converted to gas) the TXV chokes down the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator coil. Older systems simply use a fixed orifice to accomplish the same thing. The TXV increases the efficiency of the system as it adjusts the refrigerant flow rate to match the thermal load on the evaporator coil.
My 2004 has the low-level owl hoot as well, although not very noticeable. It does make sense that the issue is with the TXV as there are no other moving parts associated with the system in the rear.
I had the Owl hoot fixed also before this problem. Hummm, the same valve causes the owl hoot and the clinking/whinning noise?? Come to think about it the clinking/whinning noise came after the Owl hoot problem was fixed.
My owl hoot is gone at least, it was humorous to hear though, and the clinking/whinning remains. They replaced the TXvalve on that issue also.
I hope Ford can come out with a permanent fix for this. I may try a second dealer to see if they can fix it.
