Starting Problem

I have a 2001 SD automatic transmission with 113K miles. About 6 months ago it started having a starting problem that has gotten progressively worse. The starter is fine, but when I turn the key, I either get nothing, or the click, click, click of a relay. If I bias the shift lever one way or another, it will usually start, though sometimes I have to put it in neutral to start, or cycle the shift lever through the positions and back to park or neutral. It seems to me that the maybe something in the system that senses that the truck is not in gear when I go to start it is wearing out. Any ideas on where to start looking to diagnose this problem??

Thanks.

Yes.. there is a safety switch that only allows you start in neutral or park.. but i am not sure where it is located.. or .. it might be just an adjustment.. I am sure someone will jump in to help..

HI guys, can anyone tell me where the neutral safety switch is located on an automatic? I figured I'll start there to try to solve my starting problem.

Thanks.
