OK, looking for a hunting/hauling truck. I have been driving a semi-modified Focus for the past 3 years when I haven't been behind the wheel of a M1114.
I test drove a '95 150 4x4 last night and the steering scared the hell out of me. It felt that there was about 3" of "play" in the steering wheel before the wheels started turning. This truck was used as a "plow-truck" for a number of years. The owner also said that he was going to replace the front axels and the ball joints this upcoming week.
Am I just too used to a vehicle that goes where you point it as my Focus does? Or could there be other "issues" with this '95 that remain hidden?
Also the 5.0L had a vacuum leak, maybe the EGR, made a high pitched whistle and engine ran rough.
My biggest fear was the steering as when I brought it up to high way speeds, I almost crapped myself.
i think mine felt a little that way before i bought it. dealer replaced the ball joints for me. seems fine now. they gave me the ticket and for the dealer to do it i think it was a $500+ job. keep that in mind in your pricing. someone else will give you a less vague answer, hang in there. (pun intended)
I had an 88 that i replaced the shaft between the steering colund and the steering box. the plastic or rubber insert had fallen out and gave me that 3" of 'play' int he steering wheel.
