Another hard to start thread

Hi again all,

I have a 93 f350 7.3 n/a. Got it back in June. Since then I've put on exhaust and intake, changes inj. and return lines/caps, and fuel filter in that order. Truck started great up until I did the fuel filter, now I'm having an intermittent starting problem. The first 2 times I noticed it, I had run it for awhile, shut it off for 1/2 to 1 hour, then had problems. Would start right away, run rough for a couple seconds, then die. After that it would take several tries at motoring for 10 sec or so, then cool off, then crank again before it would start. Happened a 3rd time when it had sat for a few days and was cold. This last one is what stumped me.

I noticed the first time the fuel filter had come loose (or I didn't tighten enough) and was leaking a little fuel. Haven't been able to find an obvious leak since where air could get in or where fuel was leaking. The return caps look good, so does the filter.

From reading the old threads here, it sounds like air is getting in somewhere. Anyone have ideas where to look?

Thank you

The tightening of the filter is paramount... at least 3/4 of a turn after hand tight.. use lubricant on both the Oring (base) and top seal.......

Visit..... http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/idi.htm
especially...... http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/filter.jpg ....any diesel leaking from these points will indicate air intrusion too......

If return line hoses are "painted gray" just replace as they are getting old and have hairline cracks letting air into system.

Thanks everyone.

I replaced the return lines about a month ago, don't think that's it.

Had the hard start again yesterday. I took the filter off today to inspect. I think when I did it a couple weeks ago, I forgot to put the new o-ring on. I must have got it mixed up with the new one and threw away the new one. Because the one that was on was obviously pretty old and flattened. I think this was the problem, I'll give it some time and see what happens.
