paint flaking off

Is this a common problem?

The paint on my '00 is peeling off around the rear passenger side door -- on the door itself along the top outside and also in about the same area but on the body. The paint is blistering and peeling free from the primer which looks fine. I bought this from the original owner last month.

no dents..

It's the rear passenger side door.. almost seems like the paint is bubbliing up.. blistering.. and now flaking off. It's on the door itself and in about the same area but on the main body. Almost seems like something effected that area.. I have no idea what.. but like extreme heat or cold or ????.

I also have some paint gone from the top.. in those "rain gutters" as I call them. In fact, I have some rust there. I was just going to wash well.. and apply a good coat of wax.

I have the same problem on my 2000 only it's on the inside edge of the rear passenger door. You can't see it without opening the door, but it's still a cause for concern. I don't know if it makes a difference, but my paint color is white.

Generally "bubbling" paint spots suggest surface rust but you say the primer exposed by the flaking looks fine with no rust issues? This would suggest you Ex was not properly prepped before paint was put on the primer. Has your Ex been repainted? Look for evidence around window rubbers etc. I would suggest washing your Ex really well and then examining the whole surface for any other flaking spots. Also we have a paint and body forum on this site and if you posted there you would get more expert opinions then you'll likely get here.

Steve -- yeah.. mine is inside edge also.. and also white. It's on the door itself, but also right about in the same spot on the body when the door closes. The door portion is not visible until it's opened. The body area is a bit visible.. but it's in the 'crease' where the door fits.

I bought it used.. and supposedly it's never been repainted.. but this makes me wonder. The primer is in excellent condition.. no rust.. the paint is just blistering up.. and flaking off. Also.. along the top rain gutters there is rust -- and of course the paint is gone.. but that would seem to be more typical. The blistering/peeling paint leads me to believe that maybe that door was damaged and repainted...

a quick stop at a local bodyshop will let you know if the door has been repainted --- what you are discribing suggests poor primer/paint adhesion and I know Ford did have an issue with this in the mid to late 90's but you would have more than one area flaking if it was that----

I think you have bought some bad bodywork ; in which case the only fix is some good bodywork. Rust in the gutters isn't a good thing, you'll want to get it fixed properly by a pro ASAP

Do you know if the former owner ever waxed or took care of the paint job?

Overall it appears in very good condition. Few dents, dings, scratches for an '00 model. The leather interior was like new. But it may not have been garaged. I need to do the all-over wash/wax and see if I find any other areas. Still.. the one I've described is non visible, so it makes me think 1) repaint job (body damage) 2) poor original paint.

I also have paint flaking off on my rear driver's door. Both around the window belt molding and along the top of the door.

The door has never been repainted/replaced. The paint and primer flake off exposing the metal. It is clean, rust free metal when I fist noticed it, then started to get a light coating of surface rust within a week.

I thought that the paint falling off problems were solved in the mid 90's??

In order to repair it right, I'm going to have the door stripped, epoxy sealed, then painted. If they just blend it in, who's to say it won't start flaking a few inches further down the door. Unfortunatly, that's a VERY pricey solution.

Same problem here.... blistering and flaking (about 1-11/2" sq) around the window trim of the rear doors. Goes right under the rubber.

I am wondering, as Mohrds said, if spot repainting the area will only need to be redone when it blisters/flakes off elsewhere.

Btw, mine is black...

Similar issue. I have some type of flaking happening on the rear lift gate. Not the glass part but the plastic part where the handle is. Anybody know what thats about?? Its like an outer layer of plastic or paint is blistering and coming off. Its weird...

Isaac it sounds like your clear coat is peeling away or are you losing the color too?
