Hi All....
I have exploded view of the typical steering gear for my 1951 Mercury...see the grease nipple on the top of the box....but am curious as to the maintanence on this part? Thinking it should be filled with gear oil, but where is the drain plug? Or am i way off base? Any help and tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
thx in advance..
Rick
You are correct that the steering box is filled with gear oil. I used 80W90 when I rebuilt mine. Unfortunately there is no drain plug. in order to drain the oil you either remove the fill plug and suck out the oil somehow or you have to remove the entire assembly and turn it upside down to drain it. When filled the oil level should be just up to the edge of the fill hole.
yep...just after i entered my post, i went out and actually looked at what i have...no grease nipple, but had a socket set screw on the top. Opened her up, and peered into an empty hole. not a sniff of gear oil...truck has been sitting for 26 years so im double checking and replacing everything needed as you can imagine.
