I currently have a 351 non roller in my 1989 f350. The engine is starting the classic tap, tap, knock, knock of an engine with 160,000 (maybe 260,000?) miles.
After looking around I found a good deal on a reman 351 from ATK, but it is a 94-97 roller cam engine. I was planning on the regular engine, but the parts house had this one in stock and wanted it gone.
What changes, if any, will be needed to drop this in? Any input would be great.
That's just what I was hoping to hear. I saw lots of threads about 302's needing to change the dizzy, but nothing about the 351. So the firing order is the same on these?
If that roller 351 is a roller, you'll need a steel cam gear on the distributor. You may also have issues with the hotter cam in the roller affecting the ECM. You'll need new roller cam pushrods too, they're shorter than the ones you have now. Firing order is the same for all 351's.
No problem with the pushrods, it's a complete long block already bench tested at the factory.
I'm hoping the ECM will handle it. Everything else is bone stock on the truck. I"m happy with the way it runs now and didn't plan on changing it too much, just get rid of the knock in the bottom end.
The F4TE roller is a pretty hot cam compared to the other 302/351 stockers, it's just a tad less than the roller HO cam on the intake side. If anything run it a week and then pull the plugs and make sure it's not running too lean.
If it does in fact have a roller cam in it, you will need a dist gear that is compatable to it. Other then that, pop it in and enjoy. The stock ECM will handle the roller cam no problem at all!
