Wink Bigger E-Rated Tire ?

For a different spin on the age old "Biggest Tire I can fit" question, Does anyone know who makes E-Rated 285 or 295's for the stock 16" rims ? My current BFG Rugged Trail T/A's suck in the rain, and it's that season again. I don't tow or load up my 4x4 V-10, just want max traction in the wet (do very little little snow). Can't seem to find larger sizes than stock on Tire Rack's website unless I go back to D-rated. Do you out there feel safe with D-rated tires? This would open up a lot of options.

Pirelli Scorpions and Goodyear Silent Armor get good ratings on Tire Rack.
Any opinions from new users ? Sidewall flex and tread noise a problem ?

Any other places I could look for tire reviews that you trust ?

Thanks for your input

You can get "D" rated tires in 285's that will carry the same load weightwise. That's another thing to consider. The goodyear SA's are getting rave reviews. I've got Bridgestone Revo's and I know their 285's are the same weight bearing capacity in D as the 265's are in E. They seem to be very good in the wet.

Good Point !

So I should look at the load capacity (3400 lbs for E-rated stock size tire)
and compare with the larger size D-rated tires for similar capacity ?
Sounds like a plan. Thanks !

I'm not expert but it seems there is more to the load rating than just the weight - size wall stiffness, etc.

I have Goodyear Silent Armor in 285 E rated and have loved them so far - about 4000 miles, 3500 of it towing. No snow experience yet but plenty of wet roads. When I brake (and the windows are open) the tires almost sound like they stick to the road - like a wet paint roller sound. Very good. When not breaking - very low tread noise.

Also, remember that the 285 or 295 is the tread width, not the sidewall height. That's the next number. So 285/75R16 is a 285 tread width, 75% of that for sidewall height, on a 16" rim. By saying you're looking for a "large" tire do you mean tread width, or tire diameter?

If you don't tow, then load range D may not be a problem, but I think that the X came with 'D' tires and a recall upgraded them the 'E's. Anyone with better info on the history?

well your west coast, got a Les Schwab close by? Toyo makes tires that size. If you still have good rubber look at getting your tires siped ,it helps alot

Bfg does have a 285 e rated. It all depends on what the OP calex is going to do with these tires. If u gonna do off roading and towing i would go with the bfg a/t e rated. If ur gonna do just strait up towing i would go with the goodyear wrangler silent armors. I had a pair of th wrangler silent armors and they are terrible in the dirt and arent nearly as good as the bfg a/t.

I appreciate the feedback. The Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's seem to top the list of favorite choice on the internet. But a lot of these reviewer's vehicles are lighter than our Excursions, so that's why I need your input. Did hear that the Goodyear Silent Armor Tires have a soft sidewall, and flex a lot on windy roads. Good wet grip in corners and with braking, as well as low road noise are important, not much snow where I live. Have a little 18 mo old ankle biter and safety is big on the list !

I also had the Goodrich AT's on my Excursion and had to be extremely careful when driving on wet roads. I got rid of them and put Michelin LTX M/S 265/75 R16 E rated tires on the truck and absolutely love them. I pull a 9500# enclosed car trailer without any problems and the traction and ride quality are excellent!

I dont think i would ever go with the silent armors again. UNLESS it was a pure tow vehicle and no off road use.

I'll second the LTX M&S recommendation. I have a set on my Grand Cherokee.... 80K km's (48,000 miles) and they still have some tread on them. They are a tad pricey but well worth it!

Super quiet and really good in ALL weather conditions (had an 18" snowfall here a couple of winters ago and they got me home like I was driving in summer)
