I am several months if not a year or more from painting my truck...
I have been warned that rust will pop up after the paint has been sprayed
and it will cause bubbles under the paint. dont want that. is there anyway to prevent this from happening?? I know there is por 15 and what not but will that keep the rust from forming under neath?
You can shoot your truck with a sealing primer to help prevent it in the meantime. I am not sure but unless you are using the entire POR-15 system there might be some issues later with the paint compatability. Come to think of it the same applies to any paint and primer combo.
Yeah, thats what my paint guy said...he is a sherwin williams automotive paint guy. and he uses a etching sealing primer that they have. however he painted his personal truck with it a 78 long wheel base chevy(not bad for a chevy) and it got paint bubbles only a year afterwards.
Suggest run search on topic and narrow field selection to 'paint/body' forum. Have same issue w/ muscle car effectionately refer to as the 'rust bucket'. Not an authority by no means, it's a learning project in progress. Used pressure blaster on interior cavities and inner panels that will not be exposed. Not sure would go the pressure blaster again, working with the blast material was horrible, and hazard to health, not to mention occasional pocket of media that got into the paint. Anyhow, used Por 15 on inner cavities and panels, another option other members have mentioned is product called 'rust bullet'. In process of applying 2 coats of epoxy primer on the interior and exterior surfaces intend painting, this should get me thru the winter. Understand the Por 15 can be problematic when is comes to preping for painting vehicle. Anyhow, had an urge to add my uninformed $.02.
If deeper than surface rust (cup brush dusting) consider replacing the sheet metal via tig to assure it's all solid. I'm guessing the bubbles are oil related on the chevy. Once prep has been done wiping with Acetone and fan drying is the way to go. Compressed air is highly suspect to oil/water content and will not suffice as drying tactics for a proper painting base.
You might want to go to the Eastwood Co. sight they have numerous products for the very issue you are concerned with. I use there products and have had good success over the last few years. They also have Tech articles to refer to.
I'm kind of in the same position as you are. I'm going to remove all rust using wire brush and then rust converter/metal prep. Then spray 2 coats of epoxy primer, then 1-2 coats of 2K primer (different color). You do not want to sand on epoxy at all. And you have a recoat window you must apply to. This is the reason for shooting the 2k over it. It can be sanded, It you do not do any sanding to the 2K primer it will repel water pretty good, bead up a and off. This should get you through the winter with out any problems.
