Im not a mechanic but is there any sludge during oil changes or does it look normal when changing oil?? I had a vehicle that had some sludge from probably years of abuse before I got it and the oil pickup would become clogged and than starve the engine for oil, resulting in knocking lifters ( when warmed up), oil light on, then near failure. Does it use oil?? how many miles?? have you tried oil additives (such as lucas) more history may be needed.

noisey lifters

no sluge and oil is clean as can be. The vehicle has 70,000 on it and does not smoke. I tried running trans fluid through it with at idle to see if it had and stuck valve. Now mind you this noise is coming from the the right side only. It starts off as one then sounds like more

If its a 97 and has 70,000 miles it hasent been drivin that much, has it sat in a garage for long periods?? Its possible your dealing with a collasped lifter from sitting. Usually those great deals on low milage vehicles cost you some cash because in my opnion sitting vehicles can be costly with such problems. At this point I would try a lucas oil treatment or similar and see if it helps, if not pull that intake and see what you have, lifters are not to bad to change and not to costly.
