breaking in new boots

I bought me some new redwings. First timebuyer of redwings also... Ive heard so many people say there so comfy. But mine are not broken in and are really hurting my feet i bought them over the past weekend and cant wear them right now becuase they got a blister from them on my foot.. I know I just need to break them in but how can it be done without having to hurt my feet?

I bought redwings a couple of years ago and they took a long time to break in (a couple of months). I have heard that from quite a few people. They did become tolerable though I never actually really liked those boots. They did last a long time though which kind of sucked since I didn't care for them.

Wear extra socks if they'll fit, that will make them somewhat more comfortable until the boots are softer.

Try this: wear a good cushion-y pair of socks and wear the boots for a few hours a day, say in the evenings. Don't try and do anything real strenuous wearing them just yet, but keep them on, walk around as much as you can stand them. Flex your toes and ankles to help loosen up the leather. As they get more broken in, increase the time you spend in them. It will take awhile, but don't be in any hurry, since they'll last you quite awhile. You might also try using some mink oil on them to help soften them up, too.

I've never had to break on boots, but recently got a pair of Doc Martens boots and after a day of walking in them, was bleeding.

Good advice above.

Just walk in them as much as you can and maybe use some oil on them. I was never a big fan of Redwing. I had some Carhartt boots made by them and they didn't last long.

I went back to Rockys and will never look back. I no longer do construction, but I still wear my steel toe Rockys everywhere because they are so comfortable and good looking as well.

Soak them in really hot water for awhile. Then they'll loosen up.

Well that would explain why I hated the Carhartts I had right after the Redwings. After a few hours in those my feet hurt so bad I could hardly stand up any longer.

If you can wear them while you soak them in warm water it works better. And if you do soak them, don't take them off right away. Let them dry a little before you do take them off. It worked on a pair of Georgia Logging Boots I had.

If you buy quality boots you don't have to break them in...

The down side of that is quality boots will cost you at least $250...

Oil, lots of socks, and constant wear. Beware of Carhart: some are made in China. Redwing: made in USA.

I'll second the water remedy. Only I would wear them and get them wet at the same time. I have a pair of Hathorn Smoke Jumper boots that were really hard to get broke in. I put on a thick pair of socks, and the boots, then walked through a creek for a while. After that I wore them for the rest of the day. It helps if you are out camping or you just decide to go for an afternoon hike. Just be sure to take an extra pair of shoes if it gets too bad.

I get Cat steel-toed boots and just wear them for a half-day at a time a couple days a week for a few weeks to break them in. But that's just because I have a hard time getting new boots all dirty and scratched up...

To prevent blisters... Duct tape fixes everything.

Just put some on where you think it will rub and it will help prevent blisters. Wear cushiony socks and if you can a very thin inner sock. Let the socks slide agaisnt each other and not against your skin is the philosophy.

Or if you want to spend money go to a sports shop, like REI etc and look for something called body glide. It is like a stick deodorant looking thing but it is a lubricant for skin to prevent blisters and chaffing. I use it when I hike.

Can't say what works on breaking in shoes other than wear them a bit at a time when you won't need distance or lots of time.

If you are going to oil them, I like to put them in an oven on low low low to heat them up and then apply the oil. It melts and sucks right in. I have heard good and bad about oils and long life so not sure what to believe.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
